Journalists: An Endangered Species?
|
According to the Committee To Protect Journalists, over 1,320 journalists have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1992. These journalists were men, women, Europeans, Asians, Americans, parents, sons, and daughters. They were professionals.
The Final Word reporters have each chosen one journalist to memorialize on our page by sharing his/her story. We want the world to remember these brave professionals who followed their call to duty and were the guardians of democracy for their respective countries.

In the politically-risky world of professional journalism, news reporters are fast becoming an endangered species. The numbers are staggering: over 1,300 journalists have been killed since 1992, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). In 2017, 46 journalists were killed worldwide. The “deadliest countries” for journalists include Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Libya and Mexico, where international news organizations took the heaviest toll.
